FMP:VOLUMINOUS ARCHITECTURE

Welcome to my FMP! Follow me on the journey of where I started my project and how I progressed on from researching to designing and making!

MY CONCEPT

My chosen concept is called 'Voluminous Architecture'. This concept was inspired by the question of 'what do I enjoy besides fashion?' My answer was photography, having a camera in my hand and being able to take photos of both landscapes and architecture or anything that captures my eyes. However, over the summer the idea of architecture was what inspired me the most in which I gathered all my images of interesting architectures that was taken locally and overseas.

PROJECT ETHOS

As part of my project ethos, I wanted to include both diversity and sustainability. Including these elements within my project has shown an equal balance of being environmentally friendly and diverse to peers. Being environmentally friendly has allowed me to use sustainable fabrics and create an aesthetic for my project. Including diversity within my project has displayed an equal balance of each individual and their culture.

MY RESEARCH

My research was gathered by collecting a range of primary and secondary resources. Primary research being photos that I have taken and secondary resources being images that is from artists, designers and photographers. Using both resources have been used to create a series of boards in which they have been analysed by drawing out interesting shapes, silhouettes and details that may be useful when I progress forward with my research.

COMP REPORTS

For my FMP, I created two comp report, one for a high street brand and the other for a high end brand. The high street brand I have chosen to create a comp report on is ASOS and for the high end brand, I have chosen Carolina Herrera.
Creating a comp report has given me some insight of my chosen brand's customer target and the price range - looking into state entry, sweet spot and exit price points. In addition, it has also informed me of what products they sell online, how they layout their website and their range of colour and fabric as well as being able to create a SWOT analysis of both brands.
The comp reports has given me the support when making analytical and critical decisions such as design ideas or fabric and colour suggestions.

SAMPLING & EXPERIMENTATION

As I progressed on from my research, I started to work on my sampling and experimentation. From my research, I knew I wanted to work with Transformational Reconstruction as I kept focusing on the architectures shape in which I felt that this technique would look even more complex and exciting if I were to add ruffles to it as I wanted my concept - Voluminous Architecture to intertwine with the sampling I had completed.

SHAPE MAKING

Following up on sampling and experimentation, I did isolated shape making on the stand. This task was very creative in which I cut out pieces of fabric in the shapes I gathered from my images and draped it on the stand. I created a series of boards that shows new shapes that was analysed on the stand and manipulated the images to create skirts, tops and sleeves. The task of manipulating the images was repeated again but I made it look more complex and created a series of potential high end outfits.

DEVELOPMENT DESIGN

And the process of designing begins! Recreating a series of designs using the silhouettes and details gathered from the isolated shape making, mix and matched a selection of tops, skirts and oversized jackets to create my final collection of high end garments. Using the wide range of high end choices, I diffused downwards to create my high street collection in hopes of making two garments out of the final six.

COLOUR & FABRIC

I created two colour and fabric boards, one for my high street collection and the other for the high end collection. For my high street collection, the colour palette - 'Washed Out Concrete' was based on the colours I analysed in my primary research which consisted of white, black, greys and hints of blue. For my high end collection, the colour palette - 'Natural And Concrete' was based upon a similar palette as the high street collection but I wanted to bring some natural tones in to give it a rich and majestic vibe.

PATTERN CUTTING & TOILE CRITIQUE

Pattern masters at hand. As I came to a decision of which two final garments I would like to make, I began my pattern cutting process in which I created a pile of working patterns and final pattern that will be used when making my toiles. Making my toiles has allowed me to see what changes I need to make as well as doing a toile critique with my peers and in return I would get critical feedback about the garment and it would be taken into consideration.

MY FINAL GARMENTS

TECH PACKS, SPECS AND COSTING SHEETS

As my FMP comes to an end, I work on each garment or design by creating a tech pack, spec and costing sheet. These documents are important as they are in the fashion industry, entailing every detail about each garment from construction to measurements to fabric and fastenings as well as giving a cost of how much the garment is. Creating these documents also include creating a CAD flat of the garment and specifying where there are stitch line, darts, buttons and many more.
